Under Floor Heating systems provide a total and effective non-intrusive clean and silent solution to room heating. The comfort levels are far superior to any other heating system particularly when fitted under ceramic tiles, natural stone or marble. Benefit from the healthier living environment that UFH creates and at around 20% lower running costs than a traditional radiator system.

A well-insulated building will readily accept an UFH system and provide excellent comfort levels. The basis of any well-designed heating system is to provide a comfortable environment for the occupants. Providing a comfort zone from the floor up to approximately 2.5 m is an economical and sensible way to approach this, and is easily achieved by using the floor structure as the heat source. The heat is stored in the mass of the floor and once up to temperature the thermostat will maintain the heat in the floor and keep the room at the perfect temperature.

Why is UFH Superior to any type of Radiator?

Radiators work to a high temperature - around 65 degrees C - producing intensive heat in the immediate vicinity but lower temperatures at a distance. Much of the heat given out by a radiator is by convection resulting in higher temperatures at ceiling level and lower temperatures at floor level so completely opposite to the ideal. Air currents are produced which cause discomfort and movement of dust. UFH operates at lower temperatures of around 35/40 degrees C mostly producing radiant heat resulting in a very even and stable room temperature.

Intelligent Floor Warming Systems

When using a radiator system the heat output is a function of the surface area of the radiator and the mean water temperature flowing through the circuit. The principal is the same for floor heating, but as the floor area is considerably greater than that of a radiator the mean water temperature can be reduced well below that of a radiator circuit.

An UFH system consists of circuits of pipe embedded in the floor. Each of these circuits is connected to a distribution manifold onto individual pairs of valves.  Room thermostats and actuators can then easily control the separate circuits.

The Begetube floor-heating pipe is cross-linked polyethylene with an oxygen barrier built into the pipe wall.  Pex is an incredibly durable material, the actual life span of this material is unknown, but mechanical testing at elevated pressures and temperatures have indicated an absolute minimum life of fifty years with a safety factor of 2.5 (in other words, the pipe should last as long as the life expectancy of the building).

Control of the water temperature is important; water at boiler temperature should not be allowed to enter the floor structure.  This control is achieved by either a manually operated three port blending valve with a remote sensing control head, or by using a weather compensating control system.

The source of heated water is generally a boiler or alternatives such as ground source heat pump or air source heat pump, all of which can be assisted by solar.

Pipe

WHY 5 LAYERS? Because only the best will do. There is no point putting an oxygen barrier layer on the outside of a pipe where it is susceptible to physical, chemical & UV damage not allowing it to act effectively as an oxygen barrier at all.  EVOH is a fabulous oxygen permeation barrier but is a delicate material and needs to be protected within the pipe wall to maintain its integrity for the life of the heating system.  With PEX you can be confident that the oxygen barrier will protect your heating system from corrosion.

We place a huge importance on the controls we specify and use.  The control system is an integral part of any UFH system. Control on a room-by-room basis creates the ideal situation for floor heating efficiency and can be programmed to heat rooms only when required.

Designing an UFH system is a simple process with the right information.

In association with the Begetube design team we will carry out all of the necessary heat loss calculations and pipe layout requirements and give you the control options suitable for your project.

What we need from you:

  • a scale floor plan with dimensions shown in .pdf format (can be hand drawn but must have accurate dimensions marked)
  • elevation plans - not always required
  • details of the floor, wall etc. structures
  • insulation levels in the building or expected within the building and if you are intending to leave any exposed stone walls etc.
  • details of the method of heating the water for the UFH system - ie boiler type and KW output if known
  • final floor coverings if known
  • your preferred location for the manifold(s) which we will honour if possible

We will provide you with a specification for your project and once you have chosen the control option  we will provide the devis. We usually need to visit your project before we are able to provide the devis, particularly for installed systems, which we will arrange with you as appropriate.

We will ask you to confirm the accuracy of the plans you have provided to us prior to any system being ordered so please make sure you have provided us with the latest copies and are not intending to make any further alterations to wall positions, floor heights etc. We will presume toilets and baths etc. are floor mounted unless otherwise stated.

All elements for your floor warming system will come colour coded and referenced on the corresponding CAD drawing for ease of installation.

The IVAR manifolds are preassembled by Begetube and mounted on board again for easy carriage and installation. You will be provided with full CAD drawings and the installation manual is available in our download section should you wish to self install your system.

We do not supply the under floor insulation boards but can provide advice on the specification and thickness recommended. Recommended suppliers on request ie Kingspan, Celotex or Isover high grade rigid polyisocyanurate foam (PIR) insulation boards.

  4. You decide your level of control and installation requirements
  5. We visit site with you if necessary
  6. The Devis is drawn up and agreed and deposits arranged
  7. Drawings or plans are confirmed and the system is ordered
  8. Delivery to France is normally 2-3 weeks
  9. CAD drawings are obtained and installation arranged
  10. You arrange the floor insulation boarding to be delivered and laid (we can advise and we may be able to do this)
  11. We will set a date for installation
  12. We will fill the system and pressure test and provide certification
  13. Once you have the pressure test results you can arrange the screed to be poured
  14. We can return to connect up the UFH system to your boiler/ASHP and commission the heating system if required
